Debunking This Common Heat Myth

MYTH: Heatstroke Happens Instantly

There's nothing quite like being outside on a bright, sunny day. It's therapeutic, warms us up, keeps us healthy, and makes us feel happy and alive. However, the progression from enjoyment to danger is caused by the failure to take appropriate steps to prevent the buildup of heat in the body’s internal core rising above 100°F. The body’s cooling system regulates heat that accumulates in our internal organs, muscles and nerves by moving that heat to the skin through fluids or sweat.

REALITY:  In extreme heat, heat builds up at a rate faster than the body's ability to cool itself. Factors that contribute to heat stress and heat stroke include: personal heat tolerance and sensitivity levels; high air temperatures; high humidity levels; which hinders sweat evaporation; surrounding objects that absorb and radiate heat; tissue-damaging direct sun high UV rays; physical exertion; equipment; clothing; and lack of hydration. It's essential to be vigilant and manage heat buildup by cooling the body’s internal core to its optimal functional range to prevent heat illness.
