Climate Trends & Our Health Risks

Rising global temperatures resulting in hotter daily and seasonal average temperatures, longer more frequent prolonged, intense and extreme heat waves, unpredictable precipitation patterns and shifts in the ecosystems, vulnerable groups - elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions will become more of a growing health concern.

What may not be as obvious is how rising heat temperatures will disrupt, restrict and alter the daily life of all, as everyone becomes susceptible to the effects of heat risks.

GET TO KNOW OUR KOOL WORLD

Extreme Heat Affects Everyone

As wet bulb temperatures (temperature and humidity) rise above the human body's heat tolerance limit 95°F (35°C), the body's thermoregulation system is overwhelmed as it can no longer cool through perspiration and evaporation.

These extreme conditions not only increase the risks of heat related illnesses (i.e. heat stress, hyperthermia, heat exhaustion and heat stroke), but also the risks of indirect illnesses such as diabetes, respiratory, cardiovascular, cognitive and mental health as well. Everyone is at risk of the effects of heat, not just children, elderly, pregnant women or those with pre-existing health conditions.

HOW PEOPLE ARE BEING AFFECTED
Between 2000-2019, approximately 489,000 people died each year from heat-related causes. Image: empty, old women's running shoes on gym floor

All common and everyday activities, such as walking, running, biking, playing sports making deliveries, construction, emergency services, and outdoor activities can become challenging and potentially life threatening.
